This document explains what data the Miswak app processes and when it sends data to external services.
Miswak does not ask you to create an account. Your prayer records, dhikr counters, bookmarks and settings are stored only on your device; they are not sent to any server of ours. Some features need to contact third-party services in order to work, and each of those is listed below. Which parts of the app are used is measured anonymously; the details are under Usage measurement below.
Your location is needed to calculate prayer times and the direction of the Qibla. These calculations run on your device, and your location is not sent anywhere for them.
The following features send your coordinates to the service they rely on:
Finding your city name. Your device's own geocoding service is used to show the name of the place you are in. On iOS this is Apple's service, on Android it is Google's.
Weather. Your coordinates are sent to Open Meteo (api.open-meteo.com).
City search. When you search for a city by hand, your search text is sent to the OpenStreetMap Nominatim service (nominatim.openstreetmap.org).
Nearby mosques and halal places. Your coordinates are sent to the OpenStreetMap Overpass service (overpass-api.de, overpass.kumi.systems).
If you do not grant location permission, the app asks you to choose your city by hand; the location-based features above then work according to the city you chose.
Quran texts, translations and hadith texts are downloaded from open source archives (cdn.jsdelivr.net, cdn.islamic.network). These requests contain only which content is to be downloaded; no personal data is sent.
Adhan recordings are downloaded the same way.
When you ask for directions to a mosque, the map application you chose opens (Apple Maps, Google Maps or Yandex). This opens a link on your device; the app does not send data to those services on its own.
The free version shows Google AdMob advertisements. AdMob may collect data such as device identifiers in order to serve and measure ads. See Google's privacy policy for details. The Pro version shows no advertisements.
To improve the app, we measure which parts of it are used. This measurement is carried out through a service called PostHog, and the data is processed on servers within the European Union (eu.i.posthog.com).
The following information is sent:
The country and city are derived from the IP address the request comes from; the IP address itself is also stored by PostHog.
Your location, the text you type into search boxes, which supplication or hadith you open, your missed prayer counts, your zakat amounts and your date of birth are not included in this measurement. No screen recording or tap recording takes place.
You can turn this measurement off under Settings → Privacy → Data sharing. When you turn it off, the number assigned to your device is also reset.
Pro membership purchases are handled through RevenueCat together with the Apple App Store or Google Play. Your payment details are not passed to the app.
Prayer time notifications are scheduled on your device. Notification content is prepared inside the app; it is not sent from a server.
When you create a backup, your data is written to a file and you decide where to save it. The app does not upload your backup anywhere.
Miswak is not an application designed specifically for or targeted at children. Miswak does not knowingly collect personal data from children.
This policy may be updated. Any significant change will be announced inside the app.
